Lasix – What You Should Be Aware Of

February 17th, 2012 Questions on Lasik Eye Surgery

David asks…

How big of a difference does Lasix make?

I always bet horses that have raced before and then end up on Lasix for the first time later in their career. I also like to play horses that have blinkers on when they didn’t in their previous races.

answers:

Using Lasix in horses can definitely make a big difference. A lot of horses will always bleed, severely, during their races, and if severe enough, it can actually kill them as the bleeding generally comes from the lungs. I do believe a champion Australian race mare called Let’s Elope successfully raced in the United States whilst on Lasix, something she could not have done had she still been racing in Australia.

Mary asks…

How many grams of Lasix need to be administered in the following problem?

Physician orders Lasix 80mg IV push stat followed by 30mg po bid. The label reads 40mg in 4mL. How many grams of Lasix will you administer IV?
Thanks in advance. Im really confused by this question

answers:

Well, forst of all, you’re not dealing in grams, you’re dealing in milligrams, and your question is asking for a volume. If you have 40mg in 4ml, and you need 80mg, you’re equation would be as follows:

40/4 = 80/x
80*4=40x
320=40x
x=8

So, you’d need 8 ml

And you would be administering 80mg, which equals 0.08 grams

Sandy asks…

How long does it take Lasix (40 mg) to start working?

After I take my first dose of lasix (Furosemide) how long will it take before I have more urine production? Took it this morning but no increase in volume or frequency.
Thank you.

answers:

It’s supposed to take about 30 minutes. IDK if it’s supposed to build up in your system or not. Keep taking it and it should start working.

George asks…

What is the purpose of albumin with lasix?

What is the exact purpose of giving albumin with lasix?

answers:

Combining intravenous albumin with lasix is often used to treat accumulation of fluid in the abdomen or tissues as is often seen in patients with cirrhosis of the liver or after major abdominal surgery (ascites and pedal edema). Albumin remains in the circulation for a while and increases the plasma osmotic pressure, helping to draw fluid back into the circulation from wherever it is accumulating. Lasix helps to get rid of the fluid in the urine.

Mark asks…

How does racing without lasix work?

If you choose not to/can’t use lasix do you accept that your horses will sometimes bleed, or do you only run horses that don’t bleed?

answers:

In some horses the lasix drug obviously helps the horses to be more comfortable. That it is for the horses’ benefit and that it helps to protect them from the strenuous nature of running at top speeds. And if the horse is given the sufficient amount of electrolytes after the race, the excessive loss of water which is a side effect of the drug it is not harmful at all.

Trainers/owners who use Lasix as a tool to mask the use of illegal steroids and drugs in their horses don’t deserve to be apart of the industry, period.

Lasix is legal to use in all of the states. Note that, the United States is the only country that Lasix is legal. Horses who race in Europe, the Middle East, Australia and countless others run Lasix free. Which is another point of argument used by the people who oppose the use of Lasix.

Bottom line While some horses need Lasix and respond well, some do better without it, and there’s some where lasix is not effective at all. Every horse is different and we should treat them as such. I agree that any type of abuse whether drug or other is WRONG and should NOT be tolerated. If we didn’t have lasix a huge amount of horses would not be able to run, using lasix gives the a chance and should be handled with care.

Ruth asks…

can u please tell me how can get rid off from the side effects of lasix?

My dad is taking lasix 40mg and urispas 2 times a day since 1 and a half month (He had 2nd time heart attack on 31st dec. 2007, he has high blood sugar and low blood pressure too). But from 1 week he is suffering from some sort of mental confusions… Is this occurred from the side effects or over doges of those medicines?

answers:

Mental confusion in his case could be due to various reasons and one of them can be due to electrolyte disturbance due to lasix which causes loss of potassium leading to hypokalemia and hypernatremia which can cause mental confusion. His sugar levels may be low i.e. Hypoglycemia or his kidney functions may be deranged even a low cardiac output may cause this. It is a matter that requires immediate medical evaluation by a doctor.

Susan asks…

Why can’t I get lasix done to correct my eyes even just enough to wear contacts again?

I realize once the astigmatism reaches a certain curvature it is not lasix eligible. I am asking if it can be corrected as much as possible without removing the cornea itself, so I can wear much weaker, cheaper glasses and start wearing contacts again.

answers:

This is a super fantastic question. However, it is one only your doctor can answer becuase they know your specific situation, and we, do not. Laser surgery takes so much more into consideration, not just the Rx. So, the info you need would be better given to you by a doctor that has examined you. Good luck!

Carol asks…

Yorkie with liver shunts and new meds, enalapril and lasix, now shakes? What is wrong now?

She has multiple shunts, has been on denamarin, amoxicillain, lactose and pepcid for a year. Now they have added enalapril & lasix. She has began to shake as if she is cold, it last about 10 minutes and is getting more frequent. Vets say they don’t know why.

answers:

And it might be affecting her blood pressure, making it low. Or causing muscle weakness, or chills, or stress.

Have you tried a sweater or doggie pjs/sweats to keep her warm?

Is it possible to have her have one, and then the other to see if the shaking stops and that way you would know what the culprit was. Can she have a ‘drug holiday’ to strip the bad stuff out of her system and help with the side effects?

Poor thing. Many blessings!
